look up - in new york 4

31 posts for 31 days in May!
Great fun and it's been wonderful going back through the photos I've taken in the past 3 years since I got my 1st digital camera.
As I post this, I imagine my daughter and her friend are waking too early to the sound of street noise, pigeons cooing on the windowsill and aircon whirring into life.

Two years ago lettuce and I took a trip to New York City and had the most amazing time. It's been lovely going back through the photos and picking out ones that fit the theme of 'looking up.' Not difficult - the tall buildings naturally draw the eye upwards.

look up - in new york 3

Today younger daughter and her best friend are winging their way across the Atlantic to the Big Apple.
They'll be food-tasting in Greenwich Village, having brunch in Penelope,
queuing for the elevators here, and checking out the beach here.
I believe they plan on doing a little shopping too!

look up - in new york 2

union square

Unashamedly stealing Betty C's 1-2-3 posting idea because it's the end of a very long week, I'm tired and fast running out of ideas for posts.
I'm determined to get to the end of this post-every-day-for-a-month thing, which has been great fun. I think I completely forgot to put a link on the NaBloPoMo site, but I'll maybe remember to do that next time.
Next time? Well, not next month - we're off on our annual holiday, but maybe July or August?

So, New York - my favourite city in the whole wide world (apart from London, of course.)

look up - in new york 1

Caught on a trip to New York a couple of years ago

I don't think I've seen advertising posters being painted directly onto a building before.
I wouldn't have wanted to be the man in the second shot. Way too high up for me!

theme thursday - wrinkle

artichoke heads, california

I have wrinkles. (I like to think of them as life's comments on my face and body.)
So, from wrinkles, I got to thinking about age.
And I thought of some of my favourite writings.

jumper by sonia rykiel at la musee des arts decoratifs, paris

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.
from When I am an Old Woman by Jenny Joseph

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale

Her infinite variety: other women cloy
The appetites they feed: but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies.
from Anthony & Cleopatra

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
from For the Fallen by L Binyon

My wishes raced through the house high hay
And nothing I cared, at my sky blue trades, that time allows
In all his tuneful turning so few and such morning songs
Before the children green and golden
Follow him out of grace,

Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take me
Up to the swallow thronged loft by the shadow of my hand,
In the moon that is always rising,
Nor that riding to sleep
I should hear him fly with the high fields
And wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land.
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

theme thursday - pets

He is quiet and small, he is black
From his ears to the tip of his tail;
He can creep through the tiniest crack
He can walk on the narrowest rail.

The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.

different angle

I'm enjoying finding photos for the 'look up' posts for NaBloPoMo. No surprise, really. As my blog title suggests I like to look at things in a different way sometimes.
I particularly love reflections.
As the last couple of posts have been about festivals, I thought I'd post this shot - the festival from a different angle.

A festival is a marvellous place for hat-spotting.
No spotted hats, unfortunately, but here are some hats I've spotted.
