Public standards of length. These British Imperial Standards were first mounted outside Greenwich Observatory main gates some time before 1866, to enable the public to check measures of length. The stated length is the distance between the inner faces of the 2 D-shaped studs.

How cool that you and Letty met up with Steve! Wonderful! I thought I had left my comment on yesterday's post but I must have done something wrong because I don't see it. Sometimes blogger plays tricks on me!

I think I remember those ancient trees from a previous post of Letty's. Please do try and persuade her to being again!
